Hopi Second Mesa Clean Up Day Garbage Removal
Project name: Hopi Second Mesa Clean Up Day (Completed)
Project number: EP003
Location: Second Mesa, Northern Arizona
Summary: The aim of this project is to pay for garbage remove from the village of Shungopavi, Second Mesa.
How many people will this project supports?
This project will affect up to 1,500 – 2000 people.
This clean up project was done by members of the village. After they finished for the day, they all came together to eat. It was a wonderful and productive day!
The issue: The issue of garbage removal has become an increasingly difficult task in the Hopi community villages. The Hopi Tribe currently has two garbage trucks that normally pick up trash, but they have been breaking down, limiting trash pick. The people themselves must pay for this service and with limited funding with many families, that trash builds up. Other issues around garbage is that larger items are not picked up by the tribes routine pick up service and this waste is very difficult to have removed. The landfill in Hopi takes only limited garbage so almost all trash needs to be driven to Holbrook for disposal which is 90 miles away!
The Hopi people want to find solutions to the issue of trash. Recycling programs, new garbage trucks and better pick up services are often looked at to support a cleaner environment. All this requires larger funding to resolve these issues.
The solution: For this project funding, we need to have the collected garbage removed from the village and taken to the landfill site in Holbrook.
Potential long term impact: Long term, Hopi needs larger funding support to find ways to recycle and remove waste items.
Volunteers needed: For this project most members of the village cleaned up garbage build up around their homes.
How you can help: Your donations will be used to pay for the pick up and removal of the waste collected.
Total funding needed: $2,550
