Project Name: Maasai Water Drilling Project
Project Number: CD006
Location: Kajiado County Region, Kenya

Summary:

In the heart of a sun -scorched region , a small Kitonya Village struggled daily with the harsh reality of water scarcity. Families would rise before dawn , trekking miles with containers and donkeys to reach the nearest water source, a stagnant pond filled with debris and contaminants. This arduous journey took its toll , both physically and emotionally as children often missed school and parents faced constant worry of illness from water they consumed. Inspired by stories of resilience and service to humanity, The Great Gathering Nonprofit Organization heard the village’s plight and felt compelled to make a difference.

Issue:

The Great Gathering Nonprofit is actively addressing the critical water access issue faced by five Maasai communities in Kajiado County, Kenya, where people, particularly women and children, must travel long distances to reach contaminated open-pit water sources shared with livestock, posing severe health risks and threatening livelihoods dependent on cattle and goats. By supporting the drilling of a well, this Community Development Project aims to provide these communities with clean, accessible water, enhancing health outcomes and enabling prosperity through sustainable livestock rearing and small-scale crop cultivation during droughts. This initiative fosters collaborative dialogues among Maasai leaders, local stakeholders ensuring long-term resilience. The impact of this project extends beyond immediate health benefits, as access to clean water empowers these communities to thrive economically and socially, reducing the burden on women and children who often bear the responsibility of water collection.

Solution:

Drilling a well that serves all their needs, mitigates risks from contaminated sources but also supports the Maasai’s ability to sustain their herds and cultivate food, creating a ripple effect of prosperity and environmental harmony.

A special note for this project: The five communities have agreed that once the well is drilled, The Great Gathering Nonprofit will assist with any needs for upkeep. After this time period is over, the communities will take over responsibility to care for the well. They will use a system that collaborates with all villages and stakeholders to sell cattle or food crops to pay for needs. We found this to be an incredible way for the communities to take on the responsibilities of upkeep.

Needs:

This project is intended to support a entire region of land of the Maasai in Kenya. Five communities will be impacted well into the future.

Due to the remote location for the drilling and construction to take place, they may need to build a road that will make it possible for the heavy equipment to travel over soft earth.

They need a water tank, solar to run the pumps, a building to protect the water source for the people to enter and be safe from animals. This will also require building water troughs for animals to drink from.

Total needs for this project: $108,000 USD.

We have worked on this project in phases for a total of five years so far. We are committed to the Maasai people to fund this project in full.

San Bushman Conservancy Project : Namibia

Namibia San Bushman

Education, Environment, Food Project

Building Community Gardens. Support for Land and Wildlife Conservancy. Cultural Support.

san-bushman-conservancy

Project Name: San Bushman Conservancy
Project Number: CD003
Location: Namibia

Summary:

The San Bushman Conservancy is in a remote region of Namibia. In the small brick building we visited in 2019, we found a resilient group of San People, committed to their people, and caring for a vast nature reserve. With the office only having had a cell phone for the first time in 2019, it was clear they needed support for their work.

Issue:

Without access to electricity or internet, they were forced to travel 3 hours, six hours return, on a dirt road just send documents and emails. The office was in need of basic technology and office supplies. The Rangers who were tasked with stewarding the land and animal populations, such as lions and elephants, they lacked even one pair of binoculars. We knew The Great Gathering Nonprofit could support them with basic supplies.

Solution:

Through your generous donations we had solar energy and satellite internet installed at the office. But there is still work to be done!

The solar panels on the roof were struck by lightning and the office has been without solar, or the internet since this took place. We are in need of funding to repair the solar. Also, there is a need to pay for the internet in this remote region, which is expensive due to the only satellite services available. Without our support, these repairs and paying for the internet for the community is out of reach.

Need:

We currently need to replace some of the equipment for the solar installation and  to send a solar expert to this remote region. Support to purchase more basic equipment for the office and Rangers. Cell phones, laptops, printers, office supplies.

Funding for a monthly charge for the internet, for community use which is expensive.
Funding for a monthly charge for a phone that is used by both the office and community.

This is an ongoing project.

We currently need $ 3,000 USD to pay for the solar repair.
Monthly $150 for the phone and remote internet access.

Mercy Say Yes Preschool / Informal Settlement : Nambia

Informal Settlement School Namibia

Education material. Community Garden. Food.

Informal settlement school that feeds hundreds of children weekly. Support to build a community garden and education materials.

Project Name: Mercy Say Yes Preschool & Soup Kitchen
Project Number: CD004
Location: Okahandja Namibia Informal Settlement

Summary:

In 2019 as we traveled through Namibia on our way to an indigenous community, we had the good fortune to meet Christiana. An incredible woman who lives in an informal settlement with a population of approximately five thousand people. Her and her husband started a small preschool as a way to care for the children in her community. Today, she feeds up to 200 children a week!

Issue:

With limited resources, Christina struggles to care for the vulnerable children. Lack of basic technology, land to grow food, access to water and supplies to teach the children. In her words, “The need is great.”

Solution:

We have worked with Christiana since 2019. Supplying her with basic needs such as a cell phone, food at Christmas, school supplies for the children, chalk boards, cooking pots and other basic needs.

Each year we have supported Mercy Say Yes Preschool the impact on community had grown. It is rare to find a person as dedicated to serving the impoverished as Christiana. She is known as the Mother Theresa of Namibia after having been in the news on several occasions. Each year, we have supplied a few more tools for her to fulfill her role as mother to hundreds of children.

Need:

The current need is to purchase a laptop, hard drives, phones, cell phone bundles and basic solar to power the equipment and food for the children. This will enable Christiana and her husband to continue building her own nonprofit in Namibia and reach donors.

This is an ongoing project.

Immediate need:  $3000 usd

Project Name: Kibera Art Collective M2
Project Number: SE001
Location: Kibera, Kenya (Largest urban slum in Africa)

Summary:

Kibira is the largest urban slum in Africa. In 2019 The Great Gathering Nonprofit was visiting the country to meet with an Elder from the Gukuyu people. We were fortunate to have been directed to a contact from Maasai Mbili Art Collective, also known as M2, to be our guide in the country.

This group of artists are not only talented, they are also great humanitarians. They do outreach work with youth and adults alike to teach them art as a way to keep them away from gang life.

We have been fortunate to have the opportunity to support mural projects in the slum when covid started as a way to educate the public. Purchased soap and food for community and artists during the hardship of covid. We have sponsored every New Years events for children and adults, supplying food and art supplies for the celebration since Dec 2019. For 2025 New Years, they fed approximately 300 children and adults. It has become a tradition in the slum after all these years of your generous donations.

This is more than a project for us. Our team at The Great Gathering Nonprofit are honored to support this unique group of artists to continue their art outreach humanitarian work.

This is an ongoing project that is part of our Social Exchange Program.

Our next phase of work with M2 is to support the construction of a website with a platform for them to sell their incredible art to the world.

Need: $6,000

Our Technology Program supports community Leaders and Liaisons

The photos we have shared are a few of the people to receive simple technology, such a phone or laptop.

Receiving a cell phone can transform lives and communities. Having a way to communicate with others is essential to building  projects that can often changes lives.

Christiana in the informal settlement of Okahandja in Namibia, used her phone to grow donor commitment to feed the impoverished.

Isaiah, used his phone to work with The Great Gathering to build the water project for five Maasai communities. Potentially changing lives for a generation once we have the drilling funding to complete the project he worked to create for his people.

Having a laptop for the Artists in Kibera Kenya, helped to document artwork by the artists and plan art exhibitions.
